With all the controversy surrounding him, seemingly wanted to throw down a monumental epic whose sheer scope would make it an achievement of itself. But more than that, it's also an unabashed embrace of the gangsta lifestyle, backing off the sober self-recognition of. Sure, there are a few reflective numbers and dead-homiez tributes, but they're much more romanticized this time around. Is the thug icon in all his brazen excess, throwing off all self-control and letting it all hang out - even if some of it would have been better kept to himself.
In that sense, it's an accurate depiction of what made him such a volatile and compelling personality, despite some undeniable filler. On the plus side, this is easily the best production he's ever had on record, handled mostly by (notably on the smash 'How Do U Want It') and; also contributes another surefire single in 'California Love' (which, unfortunately, is present only as a remix, not the original hit version).

Both hits are on the front-loaded first disc, which would be a gangsta classic in itself; other highlights include the anthemic duet '2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted,' 'All About U' (with the required -sung hook), and 'I Ain't Mad at Cha,' a tribute to old friends who've gotten off the streets. Despite some good moments, the second disc is slowed by filler and countless guest appearances, plus a few too many thug-lovin' divas crooning their loyalty. Erratic though it may be, is nonetheless carried off with the assurance of a legend in his own time, and it stands as 's magnum opus.
I did a search and found one thread on this, but it's a brief one (not even a full page). I think that there are some unanswered questions regarding the differences between the original '96 2-CD set (Was there a '95 pressing as well?) and the 2001 and 2005 remastered CD versions. Is it me, or is the '96 version almost as loud as the 2001 remaster? I DID notice a difference in sound quality though. The '96 version sounds more open, with better dynamics, and more snap.
I think the remaster has a little more bass, but it doesn't seem to translate to it 'hitting' any harder than the original version. I still need to spend more time listening to the '96 discs, but this is my initial reaction. Until today, I had only heard the 2001 remaster. I haven't heard the 2005 set, but I'm guessing that it uses the same mastering as the 2001 version. (I do have the older '2Pacalypse' and 'Strictly' CD's - I don't think they've been remastered, from what I can tell). Can anyone else shed some light on this?
I noticed that the '96 version has better clarity (mids and highs that hit harder). The remaster sounds duller to me, and seems to have just a touch more bass, but it doesn't translate to BETTER-sounding bass. I'm thinking it may be boosted-bass. It doesn't help it hit any harder. Pac's vocals sound better to me on the '96 version. I just wish that it was A LOT quieter than the remaster. The '96 set is still awfully-loud.
What's the point of having a good-sounding stereo if you can't turn it up. My amp is an older one, and thus it has no remote control to adjust the volume for discs like these. Click to expand. Is the 'Long Radio Edit' actually longer than the remix version that appears on the album? I have the 2001 CD set, which includes the video (as part of the 'enhanced' CD/s), but when you play the video, there's no time counter or anything like that, and you can't scroll or fast-forward through the video, so I have no idea which version is longer. The only way would be to time the video once the music starts.
And you know something, I was never that fond of 'Mad Max - Beyond Thunderdome', and I liked the 'California Love' video even less. CAN YOU DIG IT!!! Inglewood always up to no goood!'
